Estonia 1850-2010: Texts, Agents, Institutions and Practices

Marin Jänes and Maris Saagpakk participated in the annual conference of Gesellschaft für Interkulturelle Germanistik

Marin Jänes presented her research on translation of multilingual elements in the 19th century humoristic volume „Baltische Skizzen“ by Georg Julius von Schultz al Dr. Bertram. The Estonian translation of the book offers an example of a delicate and mindful handling of multilingualism in historical fiction. Saagpakk’s talk focused on the Estonian newspaper „Tallinna koddaniko ramat omma söbbradele male“ (1854-1857), which was created to present and explain the events of the Crimean war to Estonian peasants. The paper discussed how foreign news and events were translated and transferred into a simple language in order to help forming an audience for international news and politics.
